Job Description

The Kinkaid School is a co-educational non-sectarian day school enrolling over 1,400 students in pre-kindergarten through twelfth grade. Located on a sixty-five-acre campus in the heart of Houston, Texas, the School offers a thriving intellectual community in the midst of a vibrant, urban, diverse culture.  The Visual and Performing Arts program benefits from outstanding resources including a 773-seat auditorium, a black box theatre, a dance studio, costume and scene shops and many classrooms and rehearsal spaces. Talented students and generous production budgets allow the School to mount an ambitious season of plays, musicals, dance performances, and concerts each year.  The Theatre program currently mounts twelve productions each academic year (2 major musicals, 5 major plays, 2 Theatre for Young Audiences productions, 2 musical theatre reviews, and an evening of student-directed one-acts). The full-time Theatre staff includes three acting teachers, two technical theatre directors, a technical theatre assistant, a resident costume designer and shop manager, and a costume coordinator. Musical productions are supported by the School’s  two vocal music teachers and three choreographers.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Teach some combination of theatre classes in middle and/or upper school
  • Direct at least two shows each season
  • Direct during evening and weekend hours
  • Serve as a member of the Visual and Performing Arts Faculty, attending all meetings, and developing and updating course curricula.
  • Support the School, its mission, and its leadership
  • Be an active member of the school community by attending games, special arts events, and become part of the overall school community

  • Bachelor’s degree in Drama/Theatre or related field.  (Master’s degree preferred)
  • A minimum of three years of teaching experience, preferably in a private school setting
  • Experience in directing middle and/or high school students in both plays and musicals
  • Experience teaching students with a variety of different levels of theatrical experience (from the most novice to the most experienced)
  • Core knowledge in the development of middle and upper school children
  • Familiarity with a broad range of theatrical styles and pedagogies
  • Willingness to annually change directing and teaching assignments within the Theatre program
  • Exemplifies Kinkaid’s four core values (honesty, responsibility, respect, and kindness) in interactions with all members of the community
  • Collegial and committed to collaborating with Visual and Performing Arts faculty
